In a definition essay, your job is to provide an in-depth description of what your topic means to you. You need to choose a topic that you can make a claim about; remember a claim must be something that someone could argue with you about. Therefore, you wouldn't choose a topic such as "backpacks," "sweatshirts," or "paper airplanes" because everyone can agree on what these common objects are. Instead, choose a topic such as "love," "family," "hardship," or "courage" that may mean something different to everyone.
